Burrowing Owl

Athene cunicularia is one of the smaller owls, commonly sighted on the ground or perching on posts or rocks in pairs or family groups close to the burrow entrance.  It prefers open habitats with some vegetation. At a distance it is mostly brown with irregular white spots, and has large yellow eyes. Its habits are both diurnal and noctural, and it hunts mainly insects and small mammals. A year-round resident, fairly common.
