Since 1996, our family has stewarded a space along the shores of Laguna de Castillos where responsible tourism and conservation intertwine. As part of the Wildlife Refuge Network, we protect a critical stretch of the iconic ombú forest that thrives by these waters—safeguarding a unique Uruguayan ecosystem where cattle ranching traditions coexist with migratory birds and beyond.
Our guided tours begin in the towering ceibal grove, leading to a legendary woodland where centuries-old ombú trunks whisper ancestral tales. Expert guides reveal the secrets of this vibrant ecosystem at every turn. The journey culminates in a reserved area, untouched by cattle for 25 years, where the land unveils its true splendor: a lush tapestry of vegetation testifying to nature’s resilience.
Amid the gnarled ombúes, the songs of dozens of bird species—up to 90 recorded in a single day—accompany your walk. Many are migratory birds that find sanctuary in our wetlands, proving that production and conservation can walk hand in hand. Crossing the Arroyo de Castillos on our suspension bridge, you’ll reach a panoramic overlook where the lagoon unfolds like a mirror.
