Plastic minimization project
In 2024 Fundación Lagunas Costeras began working on the project “Towards Responsible Plastic Use and management in Schools around Coastal Lagoons in Uruguay”.
Its main objective was to promote minimization of plastic use and responsible management of this material through participatory environmental education in school communities, aiming to prevent the generation of plastic waste around the coastal lagoons of Uruguay.
The project focuses on working closely with school communities of the watersheds of the coastal lagoons in the departments of Maldonado and Rocha, involving teachers, assistants and parents, and naturally the children. The origin, use and management of plastic items at the schools are investigated, and plans are designed for their minimization and correct disposal. Regular departmental disposal networks are used when classification is available, as well as alternative solutions through cooperatives and NGOs that work in reuse and recycling.
Project implementation was carried out in close collaboration with the Coordination Center of the Basel-Central Convention Regional of Stockholm Convention for Latin America and the Caribbean, with headquarters in Uruguay (BCCC/SCRC Uruguay), and the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS) within the framework of the Plastic Waste Partnership of the Basel Convention (PWP). It is made possible thanks to funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.
One of the project highlights is its high replicability: The “Reference Educational Toolkit for Minimizing and Responsibly Managing Plastic” is available for download and application in schools and other institutions from Uruguay and can be easily adapted for use abroad.
